urse provides participants with a broader and deeper understanding of the f
ull range of research and theory in human conflict, application of this ful
ler understanding of conflict in organizations, and practical applications
for both working with specific disputes and helping to improve the organiza
tion’s systems and culture for addressing conflict.

oals of the Course
As a result of completing this course, pa
rticipants should:
- Become familiar with seminal theories and res
earch in conflict management in the fields of sociology, psychology, commun
ication, organizational management, and dispute resolution.
- Gain in
sight into how concepts from all these fields can come together to inform t
he work of the ombudsperson
- Acquire specific new conceptual tools f
or facilitating dispute resolutions in the context of broader, sometimes co
unterproductive, conflict management systems and patterns in complex organi
zations.
- Generate ideas for how the ombuds might contribute to the
development of optimal systems of organizational communication and conflict
management, especially for achieving an optimal interface among the ombuds
, human resources, legal, and executive offices.

Who Should Attend:
The course is designed for “new” ombuds (less than three years of ful
l-time practice). Its objectives are to help new practitioner

This course applies to ombuds programs in
organizational settings. It does not address some features unique to other
models of ombuds practice, such as classical, advocate, or legislative.

About the Instructors:
Sue Theiss, MA
Sue helps employees and organizations navigate the
ir way through sensitive and complex issues, choosing a path that works for
each person's unique needs and circumstances, to resolve conflict and crea
te positive change in working and learning relationships. She has provided
individual, small group, and organizational conflict management services to
a diverse group of employees and learners for over 25 years. Having direc
ted Ombuds programs at three major research universities, Sue has helped th
ousands of visitors navigate solutions to conflict in complex systems throu
gh individual coaching, mediation, training, and group facilitation.

br />While at the University of Arkansas, Sue developed and co-taught
a university course on conflict and anger management and offered a 32-hour
mediation course. At Oregon State University, she continues to provide tr
ainings for students and employees on conflict management and workplace bul
lying. As a member of IOA, Sue has presented at conferences and regional tr
ainings on workplace bullying and conflict climate. She co-developed and pr
esented the first Core course for IOA on "Theory and Applications for the O
rganizational Ombudsperson", attended by private and public institutions’ o
rganizational ombuds from around the globe. Sue holds degrees in Business A
dministration and Communication.
