This webinar is based on The Delicate Dance - a workshop planned for the IOA 2020 Annual Conference. The Delicate Dance is the balance organizational ombuds must strike to be effective in meeting their multiple responsibilities to their constituents* while practicing according to the IOA Standards of Practice. We created a model to help evaluate, strategize, and choreograph the delicate dances Ombuds frequently share or lead. For the purposes of this webinar, we will focus exclusively on dancing in a global pandemic. During the full workshop, which we hope to deliver at the next annual conference, participants will have the opportunity to apply the model to their unique challenges. Presenters:  Lauren Marx, Carolyn Esposito, and William (Bill) Maurer

Lauren Marx is an ombuds, integrated conflict management systems expert, and consultant. She was a senior researcher and lead author of a foundational study of federal ombuds commissioned by the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS). Her research has served as the foundation for ACUS Recommendation 2016-5, the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Resolution 103, and the Coalition of Federal Ombudsman’s updated Standards of Practice to name a few. Additionally, several ombuds have used it as a roadmap in the creation of new programs. It also has been cited by multiple Ombuds Office annual reports. In 2018, Lauren co-chaired the ABA’s inaugural Ombuds Day.

As a mediator, facilitator, coach, and program manager, Lauren brings over nine years of experience providing direct services and consultation for a variety of federal, state, and local government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, the judicial system, and academic institutions. During this time she has developed a distinctive style that emphasizes her directness, insight, empathy, ability to connect with others with a focus on defined outcomes and systemic recommendations to the organization. Lauren holds a Master’s Degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution and is a certified mediator, conflict coach, and restorative justice practitioner.

William (Bill) Maurer, CO-OP®, became the U.S. Census Bureau’s first organizational ombuds in September 2019. His accomplishments as an Associate Ombudsman at the U.S. Department of Energy were recognized with two Secretarial Awards. At other federal agencies, Bill served as a facilitator and trainer on national initiatives to address performance deficiencies and to transform how the agency did business. Bill was Chair of the Coalition of Federal Ombudsman. He is a current Member of IOA’s CO-OP® Recertification Committee, and was an IOA Mentor. For six years, Bill presided as Vice President of the Board of Directors for a private non-profit community mediation center. He held positions in the health care industry and in the field of educational reform. Bill has a Master's Degree in Public Administration from George Washington University and attended the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Senior Manager in Government Program. Bill is an executive leadership coach and a shared resource facilitator, mediator, and mentor throughout the federal government.

Carolyn Esposito joined AllianceBernstein (AB) as Ombuds in 2014, bringing over 35 years of business experience as a leader, consultant and coach. She serves on IOA’s CO-OP® Recertification committee, COOR’s Planning committee, the Corporate Sector committee and she is an IOA Mentor. In 2004 she founded Talent Pathways Inc. to consult on change, strategy and talent development initiatives, as well as to coach executives and high-potential talent. Previously at Prudential Securities, Carolyn held roles as First Vice President and Director: Business Integration, Learning and Performance Strategy and Financial Advisor Development. She was Senior Product Manager at Learning International and she managed training, communication, and customer service departments at Hertz. Carolyn served on the Executive Committee-Board of Directors for ICF-NYC. She is certified in Bates ExPI Executive Presence Inventory, Hogan Lead (Values, Motives, Personality Inventory), Hogan 360 and MBTI. She holds a B.A. in English, M.A. in Media Studies and an advanced certification in executive and organizational coaching.
