Inclusion and Belonging

The International Ombuds Association is a global organization that values and celebrates the international nature of our diverse membership. We aim to foster meaningful, inclusive dialogue that breaks down barriers and creates safe spaces for all perspectives and lived experiences, representing all corners of the world.

Ombuds practice is grounded in principles of dignity, fairness, and equity within organizations. These values guide our daily work as ombuds and the broader mission of the IOA.

As ombuds, we serve diverse communities of stakeholders. Our members operate as “no barrier” offices—intentionally structured to be accessible to all individuals, as defined by their office charters or governance documents, regardless of role, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, ability, religious affiliation, or socio-economic status. Maintaining this open and inclusive approach affirms our commitment to fairness and equity in the mission-driven organizations we support.

At IOA, we are committed to cultivating a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for all. This means honoring and supporting our current members while actively inviting new voices in ways that foster genuine belonging. Our organizational values and norms are built to reflect and uphold this commitment.

We strive to ensure every current and future member of IOA feels seen, valued, and empowered. By embracing each individual’s unique talents, backgrounds, and perspectives, we uphold our belief that inclusion strengthens our community. By sharing our diverse experiences—personal and professional—we build a more connected, resilient IOA.
