About the Course

This webinar will focus on ways ombuds can assist visitors in navigating cultural differences within international teams. When working with people from other countries, one must often throw basic assumptions, such as what it means to be polite or what makes a person trustworthy, out the window. By sharing information about where different cultures fall along key continuums such as high versus low context culture, indirect versus direct feedback, or task-based versus relationship-based trust, we can help visitors identify if culture-based miscommunication is a factor in their conflicts.

Appropriate for all ombuds, the session will offer ways to discuss cultural differences without stereotyping, concrete tips visitors can use to improve their work or school relationships, and approaches managers can use to set international teams up for success.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this webinar, participants will be better able to:

  • Define intercultural communication
  • Identify key cultural differences likely to be sources of misunderstanding and conflict
  • Describe a time in their lives when intercultural misunderstanding may have been at play
  • Share concrete tips for navigating intercultural communication
  • Identify resources to refer to when speaking with visitors about intercultural communication
