Over the course of six hours, we will understand the value of play (as a descriptor of energy) and how this creates the space for effective group facilitation; the importance of simulation and processing difficult issues through metaphor, particularly when there are process, communication, and effectiveness concerns; and how to move from abstract to present concerns through a guided reflection process.
We will engage in an aspect of play and discuss as a group how that activity impacted participant's openness to engaging with each other. We will discuss the Play-Simulate-Reflect model and how I arrived at this as a way of planning and executing group facilitation. We'll then break down each section, which will include simulation of various techniques, discussion, and skill-sharing. Together, we will create a case problem that we'll use throughout the session to plan a Play-Simulate-Reflect facilitation plan. We will discuss how to keep the Four Principles in mind throughout planning and execution of group facilitation, particularly independence and informality.

Jenn Mahony is the Boston Children’s Hospital Ombuds Office Director. She has 20 years of conflict resolution and conflict resiliency work as an Ombuds, mediator, facilitator, conflict coach, and educator. She focuses on restorative practices so that people can feel successful at work and in their working relationships. She obtained her J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 2001, worked as a dispute resolution professional and Ombuds in New Zealand for almost 10 years, and was an Associate Ombudsman at the National Institutes of Health. She is a member of the International Ombuds Association, and the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand, where she is a fellow in arbitration and on the AMINZ mediation panel. She is a frequent presenter and educator on conflict resolution and building conflict resiliency at work.

All cancellation requests received 21 days in advance of the event start date, will be issued a refund less a $75 USD processing fee. No refunds will be given thereafter except in the event of extenuating circumstances. Requests for registration cancellation must be submitted in writing via email to [email protected]. Substitute attendees will be permitted. Substitution requests must be in writing via email to [email protected] no later than two days before the event's start date of 9 July 2025.
Full payment of registration fees is required 7 days before the start of a course. If payment is not made prior to the start of the course, event details will not be released to you and your registration may be canceled. The IOA office will contact registered individuals with a balance due before canceling their registration. IOA asks that all registered attendees confirm system requirements and test their computers prior to the start of each virtual session. If the Zoom or other platform used experiences a failure that is beyond our control, IOA may reschedule the session. If an attendee experiences a technical failure on their end, and the session is being recorded, attendees may watch the recorded session. If the session is not recorded, no refund will be issued.
Each virtual session may be recorded. These recordings may be provided for later viewing and may be used for promotional purposes, advertising, and other print and online materials at the sole discretion of IOA. By registering for a virtual session you consent to be recorded by IOA when attending live sessions.
