Course Description 

This course will familiarize organizational ombuds with the principles of facilitative mediation. As a result of this training, participants will be able to: summarize the theory behind facilitative mediation, consider the utility of mediation concepts in ombuds work, and explore how ombuds can offer mediation services. Outcomes of this course may include: ombuds receiving mediation training, ombuds using mediation techniques in their individual and group work, and ombuds offering mediation services.

• Learn about the goals, principles and activities of the mediation process and to practice the skills needed to be an effective mediator.
• Explore the similarities and differences between mediation and ombudsing and to consider all steps in bringing visitors together for an informal mediation (facilitated discussion). This includes how to present this as a visitor option, approach the second visitor, prepare both visitors to come face-to-face, conduct the facilitated conversation and consider if/when/how to help document any agreements reached and provide appropriate follow-up.

Instructor

David Schwartz
David G. Schwartz, Ombuds, professor, and gaming historian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, studies conflict resolution, gambling and games, and history. He is a Certified Organizational Ombuds Practitioner and credentialed mediator. An Atlantic City, New Jersey native and former casino employee, Schwartz has written and edited several books, including At the Sands, Cutting the Wire, Roll the Bones, Grandissimo, and Boardwalk Playground. He earned his Ph.D. in United States History from UCLA, and teaches several classes, including casino history, video games, conspiracy theories, alternate history, and jazz history. He is also an enthusiastic speaker and workshop leader.
