Hello, IOA -- from your Volunteer Coordination Committee (VCC)!

As a volunteer-driven organization, there are so many great individuals already contributing their time, skills, and energy to advancing work within IOA, but there are still phenomenal volunteer opportunities that await eager individuals!

The VCC is excited to share the following open IOA volunteer opportunities. We encourage you to review the below opportunities and get involved with IOA!

Journal of the International Ombudsman Association (JIOA) Associate Editor:

The Associate Editors shall assist the Editor edit and publish the Journal. The Editor may appoint two to four Associate Editors for renewable, three-year terms, subject to approval by the Board of Directors.

The purpose of the Associate Editor focuses on developing and implementing editorial standards of practices; soliciting articles; accepting and rejecting articles for peer review; developing reviewer guidelines, editorial rating criteria, and training materials for reviewers; ensuring reviews are qualified, impartial, and fair. Other roles associated with this position include ensuring that reviewers meet agreed-upon reviewing deadlines; preserving the confidentiality of the review process; maintaining a record of submission articles under consideration, rejected, accepted pending revision, and accepted for publication; developing articles; communicating with all authors and reviews in a courteous and diplomatic manner; ensuring that all articles respect copy right laws; checking all submissions for completeness, accuracy, references, and permissions; planning for an orderly transition at the end of the appointment.

Only current members of IOA may serve as Associate Editors.The Associate Editors are subject to removal by the Editor in consultation with the Board of Directors. No more than one of the Associate Editors may be a member of the Board of Directors. Communications Committee:

ComCom is currently searching for volunteer(s) to serve as the editor(s) of The Independent Voice.

As the editor(s) of The Independent Voice, you would be a critical part of the ComCom team in ensuring the publication of The Independent Voice so that members can stay up to date on the latest organizational ombuds and IOA information.

Professional Development Committee:


The Professional Development Committee (PDC) is currently in search of at least two more members to support the expanded project work and goals of the PDC.

The PDC is responsible for developing and providing coursework that supports the mission of IOA and the training and development needs of IOA members.

Research & Assessment Committee:

The Research & Assessment Committee is currently in search of a new co-chair to work closely with Dr. Shannon Burton in leading the committee, as well as volunteers who would like to serve as members of the committee.

The purpose of the Research & Assessment Committee focuses on enhancing our practice through filling the research and assessment gaps, supporting research and assessment to promote excellence in OO professional development, and studying ombuds practices to better understand what ombuds do and improve practice based on research findings.

Volunteer Coordination Committee:

The Volunteer Coordination Committee is currently in search of a new co-chair to work closely with Julia Heck in leading the committee, as well as volunteers who would like to serve as members of the committee.

The purpose of the Volunteer Coordination Committee focuses on developing and overseeing the volunteer pool to increase the number of volunteers active in the organization. They try to identify and direct potential volunteers into opportunities in which they are interested and well suited for. Their priorities are creating best practices documents offering guidance and recognizing and motivating volunteers and continuing to improve strategies for recruitment, retention and recognition of IOA Volunteers. The committee serves in parallel with other committees to raise awareness within the community about the various specific needs within IOA and recruit suitable volunteers.
