IOA Live Seminar Series: Title IX and the Ombuds 

Join Michelle Horvath for an enlightening session tailored for ombuds at all experience levels. 

In this webinar, participants will gain information about Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), including its applicability to public and private institutions, its historical and likely evolution, the general process of investigating an allegation, relevant appeals processes, and the manner in which am ombuds office can provide support and guidance to participations involved or adjacent to the process.

Learning Objectives:

Following this webinar, participants will be able to: 

1. Understand the legal requirements of Title IX;
2. Articulate recent and current developments to the legislation;
3. Identify the varying participants in or adjacent to a Title IX process; and,
4. Understand some of the ways that an ombuds can provide confidential, impartial, independent, and informal support and guidance to Title IX participants.

Presenter Bio: 

Michelle R. Horvath has served as the University Ombudsperson at The University of Alabama at Birmingham since January 2023; her previous roles in higher education have included: Assistant Dean of Students—Student Conduct and Academic Integrity and Deputy Title IX Coordinator at Florida International University (Miami, FL), Judicial Administrator and Deputy Title IX Coordinator at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), and Director of the Office of Citizenship and Community Standards at Truman State University (Kirksville, MO).

Originally from Michigan, Michelle holds a Bachelor of Science in History from Grand Valley State University, a Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School (now Western Michigan Cooley Law School), and a Master of Arts in Higher Education/Student Personnel from the University of Mississippi. 

Michelle is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and a certified mediator.  In her spare time, Michelle enjoys traveling, listening to podcasts, spending time outdoors, and trying random Groupon adventures.
