Course Description

The IOA’s Introduction to the Organizational Ombuds Practice is a 12-hour, multi-day virtual course designed for those who want to better understand how ombuds uniquely address and mitigate conflict, and how they informally identify issues and trends that can lead to systemic change. Participants will be introduced to the four foundations of practice (confidentiality, impartiality, independence, and informality).

  • How ombuds use confidentiality as a tool
  • How offices complement other support and formal channels in an organization
  • Basic communication skills, and
  • Ethical considerations used by ombuds
  • This small course format is ideal for C-suite and other leaders, program developers, and anyone responsible for conflict resolution, conflict mitigation, navigating confidentiality, addressing employee retention, or workplace culture transformation in a variety of sectors including corporate, government, NGOs, healthcare, and education. The course will also be of interest to those curious about the organizational ombuds model (including mediators, other ADR practitioners, and coaches).
